Las puertas de estos antiguos cines de La Habana nunca volverán a abrirse al público de las películas. Sus proyectores hace tiempo dejaron de lanzar esa lluvia de meteoritos que al chocar en la pantalla se convierte en personajes y paisajes. Detrás de sus paredes nada queda de “la vida interior” de los espectadores que colmaban la platea y el balcony en sus momentos de gloria. Sus butacas y la densa oscuridad sirvieron de pequeños escenarios para primeros atrevimientos, amores felices, travesuras y promesas tan verdaderas como las historias que contaban los filmes. Y no estoy seguro de que haya fantasmas que habiten estos edificios, algunos heridos de muerte para siempre, otros convertidos en locales para nuevas funciones.
De estas fachadas, la mejor conservada es la del antiguo cine Universal, en la calle Egido. Esta sala tenía 1048 butacas (izquierda). El local acoge en la actualidad a un grupo infantil de teatro.
¿Qué hacemos con estas fachadas?
Antiguo cine NEPTUNO, en Neptuno no. 507 ( 800 butacas)
En la calle Consulado estaban los cines MAJESTIC (1110 butacas) y el VERDUN ( 350 butacas)
DUPLEX (500 butacas) y REX CINEMA (750 butacas) en la calle San Rafael

La fachada de la calle Egido, a la derecha del cine Universal, es puramente Cordobesa, arabigo-andaluza, sus arcos y detalles arquitectónicos son propios de la cultura morisca en Córdoba, mi ciudad.
